The day began with time to kill before the first panel I wanted to attend, so I walked around the floor taking pictures and talking to people. I started to have a great conversation with a guy about the comics he published until someone else came up and grabbed his attention and I got tired of waiting. I'll have to check him out again tomorrow.
I hit the Ultimate Panel with Marvel EIC Joe Quesada, Marketing and Publicity Director Jim McMann, and Ultimates 3 writer Jeph Loeb. Mixed with many barbed shots at DC, they let us know about the future of the Ultimate universe and some of the creative teams. They talked about the upcoming crossover between the Ultimate universe and the Supreme Squadron universe in a 9 issue mini called Ultimate Power. The first three issues will be written by Brian Bendis, the second three will be written by J. Michael Straczynski, and Jeph Loeb will be finishing up the last three issues.
Next were announcements that:
Ultimates 3 will be colored digitally by Chris Lightner.
Ultimate Vision by Mike Carey and Brandon Peterson would be coming out in Dec of 2006.
Ultimate Cable would be appearing in Ultimate X-Men #75 and he won't be like anyone expects him to be.
At this point Joe Quesada told Jeph Loeb that they had a very special quest and Michael Turner came on stage briefly. After much hugging it was announced that Turner and Loeb would be teaming up to write Ultimate Wolverine, which would serve unofficially as "Ultimate Origin." Loeb said he was excited because he didn't care as much for the orignal Origin because he said it reminded him of a Dickens novel.
Ultimates 4 would feature art from Ed McGuinnes
Ultimate Ironman is waiting for Orson Scott Card to finish the 4th issue of the next mini series before it is turned over for the pencils to begin.
Ultimate THanos would be coming to Ultimate Fantastic Four. Quesada also mentioned there would be a big Ultimate event next summer that would spring from the pages of Ultimate Fantastic Four. Makes you wonder if that has anything to do with the coming of THanos?
Next I went to the DC Editors panel which was attended by Jim Starlin, writer of the upcoming Mystery in Space; Bob Wayne, Director of Sales; Dan Didio, EIC; Paul Levitz, President; Keith Giffen, 52 writer; Geoff Johns, writer of everything; Tony Daniel, Teen Titans artist; Andy Kubert, Batman artist;and Adam Kubert, artist on Action Comics. Very similar to yesterdays DC Nation panel, not much was given away that we didn't already know, but they fielded a ton of questions from the crowd and asked many themselves.
There were two fans that really seemed annoyed by the dark overtones of late, but Didio and Johns said that it had to get dark before it could lighten up. One fan pushed for DC to label the books for content, but Levitz responded by saying that as much as they'd like to, its very difficult to decided what makes a cut and what determines the labels. Overall it was a fun panel to sit and listen to.
The event I went to was a writing seminar by Peter David. The only problem I had with it was that I had already bought his book and had heard most of what he had to say. It was my first time meeting Peter, so I enjoyed it quite a bit and would have enjoyed it more if they would have had the AC on in that room. If you haven't read his book or talked to him, I would highly recommend it.
I closed out the day snapping pictures and looking through the vendors offerings on the floor. I was also able to get a few new sketches for my book, one of Zee of DMZ by Brian Wood; a mouse with a staff by Mike Patterson from Mouse Guard, and a sketch of Fathom by Michael Turner. They were all very gracious and it was fun to meet them. On my way out I was finally able to see the group of people who were dressed up as the Justice League and snap a quick picture of them. The costumes weren't the most authentic, but I thought they were pretty good and much better than anything my lame skills could have produced.
