I’m not even sure how or why I ended up purchasing this comic book. I tightly budget my comic money, so it seemed strange to me that I had ten more dollars to spend this week at the shop. I looked around a few times to make sure I hadn’t missed anything when I saw this comic sitting on the shelf. Something about the cover sort of called out to me. It was muted and unassuming. One a shelf full of bright colors and flashy drawings, here was this somber looking, simple cover. I picked it up and bought it and boy am I glad that I did.

Borrowed Time is the story of Taylor Devlin, a mild mannered journalist with a new assignment. He’s to go on a ship and travel through the Bermuda triangle, so he can have some first hand experience to put into an article about the strange phenomenon that go on there. If it sounds like a great setup for adventure, trust me, it is. Taylor wakes up in his cabin late one night and goes on deck to find the ship in the midst of a nasty storm. The crew is struggling mightily to keep things under control. Taylor gets knocked out. He wakes up to find that everything isn’t as it once was.

That’s the best synopsis I can give you without getting into spoiler territory. Suffice to say, things take a turn for the strange at that point. I do have one major complaint about this comic book; the fact that it ended! I haven’t found myself this enthralled by a comic in a long time. The story gripped me and I was truly upset when it ended. I love superheroes, I really do, but Borrowed Time is a great story told in comic form. Writer Neal Shaffer does an amazing job of drawing you in and making ordinary scenes engaging and fun to read. I found myself on edge, even in the early pages when everything was still normal for Taylor. This is a huge testament to the amazing storytelling abilities of Neal Shaffer and artist Joe Infurnari.

I may have picked this comic up because an irregularity in my comics budget, but I can assure you, that won’t happen again. Borrowed Time is now worked into that budget, as I can’t wait to see what happens next.
