It's issues like this one that makes me realize how much I love this title. I've been reading The Boys since issue #7 (and I caught up via the TPB) so including Herogasm, I've read about 40 issues of the series to date. And every time I read an issue, I realize just how much of the story is left untold, or how much depth of story is left if they want to pursue it.
This issue, #35, is the first of a two-parter that focuses on Mother's Milk, a character I hadn't given much more than a minute's thought to in the past. Yeah, 40 issues in, and I now realize that we've only explored two of the five main characters that are listed in the indicia. Not sure why I didn't realize that before, but it speaks to the quality of the writing and storytelling to date.
Turns out, Mother's Milk is both aptly named, and has a pretty interesting story to tell. This issue sets up how he met with Billy Butcher for the first time, and it's a pretty funny story. The process that Ennis uses is great, too, with Mother's Milk relating the story to Wee Hughie, on the bridge overlooking the rebuilding of the Twin Towers. Perfect setting for the story.
It's possible that this major-arc is going to be origins. Now that I realize how little I know about The Boys, that prospect excites me. This is also a good spot to start reading, if you don't want to go all the way back (which I also recommend.) The Boys is on the top of my pile, every month. |
