Last time in Action Comics: Dr. Polaris, you so crazy..
Superman finds himself fighting Repulse, a fictitious result of Dr. Polaris multiple personality disorder. If that wasn’t enough, his blind and has to protect Dr. Polaris from himself. Repulse uses all her powers to try and take down the man of steel including putting civilians in danger and creating a suit of armor. Superman uses his quick wits to convince Dr. Polaris it’s all in his head and he can fight it. All the while Lois Lane is busy making life hard on criminal politicians. You go girl!
I really liked the first part of this story but this second part didn’t do as much as for me. Call me old school but sometimes I like seeing the hero beat the snot out of the bad guy. But Supermans always been too much a nice guy. Oh well. I also would’ve accepted Dr. Polaris was just crazy without a flashback origin about his childhood problems but it was all in three panels so wasn’t a big problem. I think the thing that really got to me was Black Adam and Reverse-Flash from the current Secret Society showing up and taking Dr. Polaris. Did we really need Black Adam warning about a future confrontation? But despite all these points, still quite an enjoyable comic book. I’d also recommend it as one of the few superhero comics DC is putting out that younger readers could enjoy.
The art? Hey, it’s Byrne, Nelson, and Major putting together some fine work. Even though there were a few times that Black Adam looked like a beefed up Spock. All in all a great retro looking comic that will appeal to fans of old school superhero story telling and those younger readers looking to understand Byrnes legendary status.
So at this point Action Comics is my second favorite of the three Superman solo titles. I do look forward to what Simone and Byrne have planned next. Even though next month there’s a crossover running through the Superman titles and Wonder Woman(OMAC involved?). Maybe that will be good. Has some great creators involved. Plus I usually buy anything with Simone or Ruckas names attached.
