Cable\Deadpool, I’ve been off and on in with this book since it started. I love Deadpool, one of my favorite characters, but Cable I’ve always been a bit iffy on, maybe it has to do with most of my early exposure to Cable being via Rob Liefeld. I’ve recently started picking up Cable\Deadpool again and I couldn’t be happier with my choice, this really is one of the best books Marvel has right now. I find the whole “buddy story” aspect of the book hilarious. Cable and Deadpool are the Odd Couple of comics. Even the recap and letters pages are funny. I have to admit I was a little confused when I looked at the cover, I thought Cable was X-Man for a minute.
This is one of those issues that you see every now and then in almost every series, just the main characters sitting around talking. This may seem like a boring concept to some people, but to me I’ve liked everyone similar to this I’ve read. Basically what happens is Cable and Deadpool are in a bar telling stories about their pasts (or would that be future for Cable?). Deadpool has a lot of fun at Cable’s expense, and Cable gives just as good as he gets for the most part. The interesting thing hear is that what you see on the page is not exactly what the characters are telling to each other. In a way the way the book ends seems to create a bond between the two characters, they realize they have a lot more in common then they thought. Fabian Nicieza really puts a good story together while at the same time keeping it simple. Not so simple that you lose interest, but simple enough to understand what’s going on between all the flashbacks and the bickering between Cable and Deadpool. Bottom line this is just a plain fun read. It doesn’t tie into anything else and it doesn’t set up any future storylines, it’s a stand alone issue that would make for a good jumping on point for anyone wanting to try out this series.
The art is great, I’ve always been a fan of Zircher, and his style fits this book well. One thing he does that I’ve noticed a lot of artists have trouble with is showing emotion on Deadpool, yeah its kind of hard to do that with a guy who always wears his mask, but Zircher pulls it off. If you want a fun read check this out, it will have you laughing right from the recap page. Oh and the preview for Howling Commando’s in the back wasn’t too shabby either.
