Drax the Destroyer, a lot of you might be saying; who? For those of you who don’t know, a brief history of the character. Arthur Douglas was a saxophone player, he and his family were killed by aliens in the Mohave Desert, a rival group of Aliens was able to preserve Douglas’ astral form and used it to create a superhuman body to fight Thanos, after defeating Thanos, Drax was killed by his own daughter Moondragon. He was resurrected to fight Thanos again during Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War and Infinity Crusade, but the resurrection went wrong and Drax pretty much became stupid. After Thanos was defeated again, Drax became part of Infinity Watch and guardian of the Power Gem, in order to protect it he swallowed it. This would prove to be a bad thing in the Marvel: The End miniseries, as Adam Warlock needed the Infinity Gauntlet and couldn’t get the Power Gem from Drax.

This issue picks up with Drax on an intergalactic prison transport ship, with other intergalactic criminals, a Skrull named Paibok, two guys named the Blood Brothers and someone named Lunatik, needless to say, the transport crashed on Earth and the five prisoners are stuck on Earth. Keith Giffen does a good job here, of catching the reader up to speed on Drax, while it’s not known exactly what Drax did to be put in prison, I think that’s being saved for later in the miniseries. Not much dialogue to write with Drax seeing as the way he talks is similar to the Hulk. But with the dialogue of the other characters he basically has them talking amongst themselves about Drax and who he is, so if you didn’t know who he was, you get a good idea of who he is and what he’s about. I think this is crucial in a comic about such an obscure character. I’m anxious to see where Giffen takes this story and as Drax is one of my favorites I’ll be on this through issue #4. The art by Mitch Breitweiser, is perfect, it has a darkness to it which sets the tone for the rest of the mini. Drax isn’t exactly as I remember him, no purple hat with the skull on it, but that’s just me being picky. This issue was a little boring do to the fact of it setting up for the rest of the series and getting Drax’s back story in but I’m hoping the series picks up next issue, with an appearance by Thanos. Like I said I’m on for the long haul, so I’ll let you know how it turns out.
